GIF to WEBP, asked and answered

Does converting GIF to WEBP lose quality?

It depends on the settings. WEBP has both a lossy and a lossless mode, and the quality control on this page decides which one you get.

Can I convert the WEBP back to GIF?

Yes, and the file will open — but a round trip is not free. Each pass re-encodes, so going GIF to WEBP and back leaves you with less than you started with.

What can I change about the WEBP it produces?

You can set the quality, how long to spend, whether to keep EXIF, the width and height, whether to enlarge, and whether to keep every pixel. Anything left on Auto is decided by the encoder, which is usually the right answer unless you are targeting a specific size or device.

Where does the conversion happen?

In this tab. GIF to WEBP is something the browser can already do, so the file never leaves your machine and the page keeps working offline.

Is there a limit on file size?

Yes — there is a per-file cap and an hourly job limit, because this runs on one small server. The API page states the limits currently in force rather than a number baked into this page.
