HEVC and MP4 are different layers

HEVC, also called H.265, is a video codec. MP4 is a container. A file can already use an MP4 container and still fail on a device because the video stream inside uses HEVC.

Convert probes the actual stream rather than trusting the extension. Supported HEVC input is decoded and re-encoded to H.264 video with optional AAC audio in a fresh MP4 container.

What the conversion keeps

  • The first real video stream and, when present, the first supported audio stream.
  • The source resolution, with odd dimensions rounded down by one pixel for broad H.264 compatibility.
  • An ordinary yuv420p H.264 stream and fast-start MP4 layout.

What the conversion removes

  • Extra video or audio streams, subtitles, data streams, attachments, and cover art.
  • Chapters and arbitrary source metadata.
  • The original filename as a server path or output filename.

Capability depends on the pinned build

Convert only advertises HEVC support when its pinned FFmpeg build reports an HEVC decoder. Readiness fails if the configured media tools are missing or do not meet the required capability contract.

H.264 distribution, FFmpeg licensing, and codec patent questions remain operator review items. The repository records the intended build and obligations without treating them as settled legal advice.
